New York CNN —Target is limiting the number of stores that will sell LGBTQ-themed merchandise for Pride Month in June following a boycott from right-wing activists last year that took a toll on the brand’s bottom line. About half of its 2,000 stores will sell the Pride collection, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the news. The changes are a “sensible approach,” Neil Saunders, managing director of retail for GlobalData, told CNN. Pride problemsLast year, Target pulled Pride merchandise from some stores after the company and its employees became the focus of a “volatile” anti-LGBTQ campaign, which included threats against its store workers. A Target executive said on the earnings call that there was a “strong reaction” to Pride merchandise and the reaction was a “signal for us to pause, adapt and learn.”–CNN’s Nathaniel Meyersohn contributed to this report.

New York CNN —The first test subject for Neuralink, Elon Musk’s brain chip implant startup, has developed a problem just a few weeks after it was inserted. But the company said it was able to make the implant more sensitive to increase its performance even further. About a month after the operation, Musk said Arbaugh could control a computer mouse with his brain after having the chip implanted. Like existing brain-machine interfaces, the company’s implant would collect electrical signals sent out by the brain and interpret them as actions. Before Neuralink’s brain implants hit the broader market, they’ll need broader regulatory approval.

New York CNN —Panera Bread is eliminating Charged Lemonade from its menu, the caffeinated beverage that has sparked multiple lawsuits and caused a public relations nightmare for the company. The Charged Lemonades will come off the menu in the next two weeks, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the news. The chain declined to comment to CNN on the timeline of the drinks’ removal. A Panera spokesperson said new drinks will replace it, including low-sugar and low-caffeine options, including a new blueberry lavender lemonade, pomegranate hibiscus tea, citrus punch and a tropical green smoothie. Panera kept the Charged Lemonades on the menu, despite the controversies, because experts say removing the drink immediately could have come across as an implied admission that something was wrong with it in the first place.

Elizabeth Holmes shaves more time off her sentence
  + stars: | 2024-05-07 | by ( Jordan Valinsky | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
New York CNN —Disgraced former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes could be out of prison several months earlier than expected, according to the projected release date posted by the Bureau of Prisons. The Bureau of Prisons’ online database currently shows that Holmes’ expected release date from a Texas prison is August 16, 2032 — a slight reduction from her previous release date of December 29, 2032. It’s her second reduction in less than a year: She previously had her 11-year-and-three-month sentence by about two years last July. These factors that go into calculating an estimated release date are not unique to Holmes’ case, but standard for inmates, a bureau spokesman previously told CNN. Holmes is currently serving out her sentence at Federal Prison Camp Bryan, a minimum security federal prison camp that is approximately 100 miles from Houston.

The independent Oversight Board that hears appeals about content decisions on Facebook and Instagram said Tuesday it would consider whether the pro-Palestinian phrase "from the river to the sea" violates the platforms' rules including their ban on hate speech. In each of the three cases, other Facebook users reported the phrase, saying it violated platform rules on hate speech, incitement or violent organizations. The users opposed to the phrase then appealed to the Oversight Board. One of the Facebook posts being reviewed by the Oversight Board received about 8 million views, the board said. In one of its most significant decisions, the Oversight Board in 2021 upheld the suspension of former President Donald Trump from Meta's platforms but ruled that it was inappropriate to make the ban indefinite.
